Philipp Tinner: About 25 years of experience

I am Philipp Tinner, owner and managing director of FeuerWerkstatt. I completed my training as a stove fitter - today the profession is called stove builder - in 1996. Since then, I have practiced my profession with great passion. Continuous further training is a matter of course for me: I have completed business school and training as a technical salesman, and I have furthered my education in the areas of Minergie/Passive House, fire protection and occupational safety. I am currently training to become an energy consultant with a federal certificate of qualification and can now offer you competent services in all aspects of the Cantonal Energy Performance Certificate for Buildings (GEAK) and the Model Cantonal Energy Regulations (MuKEn).

The stove-building profession has a long tradition, which I cherish. ‍The history of FeuerWerkstatt

‍The forerunner of FeuerWerkstatt was TSR FeuerWerkstatt GmbH, based in Lindau/Winterberg, Switzerland: I founded this company together with a business economist at the beginning of 2010. As an operating partner, I realized sales totaling 2.3 million Swiss francs during the five-year start-up phase, and business was excellent - not least thanks to the energetic part-time collaboration of my father, an experienced craftsman all-rounder, after his retirement.

Monetary calculations by my partner eventually led to the separation of our business relationship and the liquidation of TSR FeuerWerkstatt GmbH. An amicable, future-oriented solution was rejected for tax reasons. The entry "In Liquidation" in the HR was made in December 2015. Fortunately, I protected the brand name "FeuerWerkstatt" at an early stage and secured the inventory with the help of a lawyer.

The years 2016 and 2017 were marked by professional and personal reorientation. In mid-2018, I was able to buy back the website www.feuerwerkstatt.ch. This was my heartfelt decision to create my own livelihood again. The FeuerWerkstatt was thus born "like a phoenix from the ashes".

Successful creation

‍**‍**My entrepreneurial ability is demonstrated by a steady doubling of sales since 2018, with high profitability for future innovation and investment. Since 2019, I have been a member of the American Masonry Heater Association (MHA), where I have the annual opportunity to exchange ideas with masonry contractors from many different nations around the world, including European ones. I was awarded a design award for my work by the Masonry Heater Association of North America jury. What could be nicer than drinking a glass of wine or reading a book in front of a fireplace? A fireplace is the "classic" fireplace. It is usually built - for energy reasons or for better air hygiene - with a glass pane that can be pushed up. Open fireplaces with special masses and a high-sliding, filigree expanded metal curtain as a spark protection are the latest trend. The storage fireplace is mainly used in modern buildings; it can store the heat generated to a certain extent.

Storage Stove

Warm for a long time with little wood

A storage stove gives off its heat for up to 12 hours after you have heated it up! This is ensured by the two- to three-shell construction of solid fireclay, which continuously releases the heat of the stove to the outside.

A storage stove is an economical and environmentally friendly way to provide the house with heat. It is therefore perfect as a supplement to an existing heating system or, as a water-bearing variant, as whole-house heating. Thus, the storage heater gives you a great piece of independence!

The tiled stove is also a storage stove. The difference is made by the glazed tiles visible from the outside. Often they are handmade unique pieces. The tiled stove is often found in historic properties and keeps warm for several generations. But a timelessly designed tiled stove also fits perfectly into modern living spaces!

Exhaust system and supply air

Combustion air duct and exhaust system

Any combustion, whether wood, gas or ethanol, requires oxygen and produces exhaust gases. For this reason, a line for combustion air (supply air/fresh air) as well as an exhaust system is an absolute must for every type of furnace. FeuerWerkstatt performs this work 100% clean and professionally.

Combustion air pipes must be insulated, passive houses or plus-energy houses also require a tight shut-off damper on the facade. If a furnace is not located on an exterior wall and there is no possibility for vertical routing above the roof, it is mandatory to insert the duct into the concrete ceiling. This is done at a precisely defined time, immediately after the reinforcement work. The actual chimney installation then takes place directly after completion of the shell. Therefore: Involve us at an early stage in the construction of a new building!

Whether it's a fireplace, a storage stove or a whole-house heating system: For a wood-burning stove to work optimally, the amount of air supplied must always correspond to the combustion level of the fuel. Otherwise, the wood will not burn completely, emissions such as carbon monoxide and fine dust will be produced, and the stove or fireplace will burn out.

Since the air requirement changes constantly during the burning process, optimal control by hand is often difficult or even impossible. The electronic burn-off control EAS from Brunner provides an uncomplicated remedy: it dynamically regulates the supply of combustion air. In addition, it detects unsuitable firewood - for example, firewood that is too moist - and reacts to this with a warning message. The control system also provides important feedback that can be used to improve personal usage behavior and the energy efficiency of a wood-burning stove.

Another important function is the vacuum safety shut-off switch USA. It can even save lives. This is because extractor hoods and vents such as those for toilets and bathrooms or clothes dryers can generate negative pressure in a building, which means that the smoke is no longer completely extracted. Chimney sweep / change of residence

Fires must be cleaned periodically by a chimney sweep. In the case of gas furnaces, a periodic check is sufficient, and they are cleaned only when necessary. This is required by the cantonal building insurances.

We take over the inspection and cleaning of fireplaces, storage stoves, wood stoves, chimney stoves and exhaust systems. The cantonal building insurances demand periodical cleaning, because on the one hand damages can be detected during the cleaning and on the other hand the efficiency of the firings is ensured. As a stove builder, we know the construction of the furnaces and are therefore able to clean them and carry out repairs immediately if necessary.

A reference example from practice

The photo shows a wood chip boiler or biomass furnace of the company www.schmid-energy.ch , type UTSR Visio. The combustion chamber of this furnace in the power range 180 - 8000 kW had to be overhauled, as the loads caused by continuous firing are very high.

The fire walls had to be pointed out in the area of the main combustion zone, the vault was also badly burned out and had to be broken off by two rows as well.

This was followed by the installation of the dilatations, because metals and adjacent surfaces in particular exhibit different expansions. Furthermore, the combustion air pipes had to be plugged to prevent them from filling with refractory concrete. Subsequently, the excavated area was shuttered with formwork panels and filled with a self-leveling two-component refractory concrete. After curing, the formwork was stripped, the combustion air pipes were knocked free and finally the two arches were bricked in.

This work can only be done by two people and takes several days. They are very dirty, sweaty and exhausting.

As a stove builder, this work is obvious because the vault construction, expansion joints and combustion air ducts are analogous to small wood furnaces. The difference is in the size of the fireboxes and the application temperature of the refractory concretes and fireclay. Due to the continuous burning of these fireboxes, the refractory concrete side walls and fireclay vaults start to glow. The wear of the refractory concretes and fireclay is significantly higher than with a small wood furnace.

Fireplace / Swedish stove

In retrospect often the wrong solution

Fireplace stoves and Swedish stoves have been in vogue for a long time - but they are almost never a good choice! Because they hardly store any heat, instead they overheat a room so much within a short time that you have to ventilate it. So Sweden stove owners are literally firing out the window.

Here is a numerical example: While one log is burning, it releases about 3200 watts of energy - with four burning logs in a stove, it's already 12,800 watts. For 100 m2 of living space in a well-insulated house (built in 2000 or later), however, only a heating output of about 2000 watts is required, even on cold winter days.
